The Importance of Sleep
Skin and Nutrition
Proper dietary choices help to regulate hydration, oil production, and the proper functioning of the cells. Eating foods are found in all three basic food groups: fats, carbohydrates, and proteins. Proper sleep habits, drinking plenty of water, and exercise are also beneficial to the health of the skin.
According to the Milady Standard Nail Technology textbook “Healthy skin is slightly moist, soft, and flexible with a texture (feel and appearance) that ideally is smooth and fine-grained.” The skin is also slightly acidic.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and protects the muscles, bones, blood vessels, nerves, and everything in our bodies. The medical professional that deals with conditions of the skin are called dermatologists. They are the only ones legally permitted to diagnose, treat, and prescribe any medications and treatments to patients. The hair and scalp specialists are called trichologists, and the feet specialists are called Podiatrists or Chiropodists. All branch of medicine is interconnected as there is one body with many members and various issues to be dealt with.
The Appendages of the skin include hair, nails, sweat, and oil glands. The Skin is composed of two main divisions: The epidermis which is the outermost layer and the thinnest part of the skin. There are no blood vessels, only very tiny nerve endings. The dermis is the underlying or the inner layer of the skin. It is also called the corium or cutis, and the dermis, which is the top layer. This layer contains blood vessels, lymph vessels, nerves, sweat glands, oil glands, and hair follicles.
The skin needs to be nourished and this is done through blood supplies and oxygen. The skin gets its nutrients from the molecules from foods, such as carbohydrates, proteins, and fats, which contribute to cell life, repair, and growth.
The Callus is the thickest part of the skin on the feet and should not be completely removed during a pedicure, nor be scrubbed too thin as this causes the skin to break and bacteria can enter the body and cause infections and other health issues.
The main function of the skin is responsible for protection, sensation, heat regulation, excretion, and secretion. (Milady Standard, Nail technology) This is a very good textbook and is packed with information.
